In the late afternoon of Sunday, May 26, 2024, tragedy struck in Montgomery, Alabama, when 40-year-old Shayla Jones, a female resident of the city, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. in the 900 block of South Union Street. First responders arrived to find a scene of violence, with another woman also suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Both victims were quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Shayla Jones succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The surviving victim was treated for her injuries.
The circumstances of the shooting were particularly harrowing as it was reported that Jones was killed in the presence of her young daughter, a detail that would later elevate the charges against the alleged perpetrators. The Montgomery Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, which soon led to the identification of two suspects.
The first arrest in the case came on June 6, 2024, when 20-year-old Jaquerrius Jordan of Montgomery was taken into custody. He was charged with capital murder and attempted murder. Following this, a second suspect, 21-year-old Denzel Donald-White, also from Montgomery, was apprehended on Friday, June 14, 2024, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Donald-White faced two counts of capital murder and one count of attempted murder. The capital murder charges against both men stemmed from the fact that the homicide was committed in the presence of a child under the age of 14. Both Jordan and Donald-White were placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility without bond. While arrests have been made, a motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by law enforcement. Funeral services for Shayla Jones were held on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Lilly Baptist Church.
