On a summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 28-year-old Eric Ashley Jr. of Hoover was violently cut short. It was around 5:20 p.m. on July 13, 2024, in the 1700 block of Indian Summer Drive, near the entrance to Echo Highlands Park, when a barrage of gunfire shattered the peace. Ashley, along with 28-year-old Arkia Berry of Center Point, and her 5-year-old son, Landon Brooks, were inside a blue sedan when they were ambushed.
The car, riddled with bullet holes, crashed into
the front yard of a nearby home. Responding officers discovered a horrific scene: all three occupants had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe there was an interaction between the occupants of the victims' vehicle and those in the suspect's vehicle just before the shooting. Authorities deemed the incident a 'targeted shooting,' though a specific motive was not immediately released.
In the months following the brutal slayings, the Birmingham Police Department, with assistance from federal law enforcement agencies, worked to identify those responsible. The investigation led them to Jacorrian McGregor, a 25-year-old man who was charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Ashley, Berry, and young Landon. While the arrest brought a measure of progress to the case, the community was left to mourn the senseless loss of three lives, including that of a child who was about to start kindergarten.
