Ladarrius Antonio Kennedy, a 31-year-old Black male, was found suffering from a gunshot wound on a sidewalk in Birmingham, Alabama, on the evening of July 29, 2024. The Birmingham Police Department responded to a call at approximately 10:50 p.m. at 1017 3rd Avenue West, where they discovered Kennedy unresponsive. He was immediately transported to UAB Hospital for medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Ladarrius Antonio Kennedy succumbed to his injuries eight days
later, on August 6, 2024. Following his death, the investigation by the Birmingham Police Department was reclassified as a homicide. This incident marked the city's 85th homicide investigation of the year.
Shortly after the shooting occurred, officers apprehended a suspect near Rickwood Field. The individual taken into custody was identified as 36-year-old Justin Hall. Initially, Hall was charged with attempted murder and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
In the wake of Kennedy's death, the charges against Justin Hall were upgraded to murder. The motive for the shooting has not been released by authorities. The Birmingham Police Department has acknowledged that significant assistance from the community played a crucial role in the investigation.
