On October 18, 2024, 32-year-old Devante Tashon Hall of Birmingham, Alabama, was fatally shot during a homecoming tailgate event at Southside High School in Selma. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the school's parking lot, where Hall and another individual engaged in a verbal altercation. As Hall attempted to leave, the other person produced a firearm and shot him. Witnesses reported seeing a red laser sight aimed at Hall before the shooter knelt and fired multiple shots.
