In the early morning hours of October 25, 2024, in Montgomery, Alabama, the lives of two men were tragically cut short. Devin Ligon, a 30-year-old male, and 29-year-old Jeroderick Bell, both residents of Montgomery, were discovered with life-threatening gunshot wounds in the 500 block of North Eastern Boulevard. Emergency services responded to the scene around 1:57 a.m. and transported both men to a local hospital.
Despite medical efforts, both Ligon and Bell succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead.
The Montgomery Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into the double murder. As the community mourned the loss of two of its own, authorities began the search for those responsible. Their investigation led them to identify a suspect in the case.
A breakthrough in the investigation came on November 6, 2024, when 32-year-old Bennie Humphrey Jr., also of Montgomery, was apprehended in Hutto, Texas. Humphrey was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals. Following his arrest, he was extradited back to Alabama to face charges for the murders of Devin Ligon and Jeroderick Bell. Humphrey is currently being held in the Montgomery County Detention Center without bond. His prior criminal history includes charges related to domestic violence, attempted murder, and assault. In the wake of the tragic event, Central Alabama CrimeStoppers offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
