On the evening of June 5, 1989, Anchorage Police Department Patrol Officer Louie Gordon Mizelle responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in the Mountain View area. Upon arrival around 9:30 p.m., he was met with immediate hostility; a lone gunman opened fire, striking Officer Mizelle five times with a .22 caliber rifle, inflicting wounds to his leg, abdomen, and chest.
