On June 9, 1953, Anchorage Police Officer William G. Pfalmer Jr., then 27, stopped a stolen vehicle occupied by three juveniles. As he approached, the driver attempted to flee, prompting Officer Pfalmer to disable the vehicle by shooting its transmission. When he approached the vehicle again, one of the suspects shot him, inflicting wounds to his left arm and right shoulder, which shattered his spine and left him paralyzed from the chest down.
