On July 3, 2017, Anchorage police conducted a welfare check at a residence in the 11000 block of Hillside Drive. After finding no one home and nothing suspicious during their initial visit, officers returned the following day for a second welfare check. This time, they expanded their search to the property's exterior and discovered the bodies of 75-year-old Larry Vehrs and his wife in a wooded area behind the garage.
