African-American/Black male Joseph Bruce Massey, 23, stepped into Anchorage's late-winter darkness just after bar-close on March 2, 1996. Around 3:00 a.m., as he rode shotgun in a blue Nissan four-door near the intersection of 5th Avenue and H Street downtown, a street-corner confrontation sparked.
