On January 31, 2016, 25-year-old Sergeant Nathan Michael Higginbotham, stationed at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska, died from an accidental gunshot wound. While handling a privately owned firearm, Higginbotham attempted to demonstrate that the weapon was unloaded. He ejected the magazine but failed to clear the chamber, resulting in a fatal discharge. The Fairbanks Police Department investigated the incident and found no evidence of foul play.
