On July 12, 2016, along the windswept gravel of Ekuk Beach south of Dillingham, 22-year-old male Justin Braswell—ethnicity not specified in public reports—died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Fishermen on the beach reported the incident that evening, and Alaska State Troopers confirmed it the next morning, placing the time of death at 9:50 p.m. Troopers noted alcohol was a factor, sent his body to Anchorage for autopsy, and said there was no suspicion of foul play.
