A 21-year-old Black / African American male, Sosaia Finau Jr., was shot and killed on April 12, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska. The homicide occurred in an apartment on Mountain View Drive. The killing followed a confrontation that involved two men, Mickee Bobby Marcel Thompson and Robert Smith.
According to investigators, Thompson and Smith arrived uninvited at the apartment of Thompson's former girlfriend, who had by that time begun a relationship with Finau.
After leaving, the two men returned to retrieve Thompson's child, and a dispute erupted over apartment keys. During the altercation Thompson fired a 9 mm firearm 17 times at Finau. As Thompson was departing, Smith entered the apartment and fired seven additional shots. Finau was struck by fifteen bullets in his head, trunk, arm, and legs, and died of his injuries before police arrived.
Immediate law enforcement response included issuing arrest warrants for Mickee Thompson and Robert Smith. Both suspects were considered armed and dangerous. They fled on foot toward North Park Street following the shooting.
On May 3, 2018, Anchorage police arrested both Thompson and Smith without incident. Later legal proceedings followed: Robert Smith pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in December 2022 and was taken into custody. Mickee Thompson was convicted by a jury of first- and second-degree murder in February 2024 after a trial in which the state argued that he intentionally killed Finau.
Sentencing for Thompson occurred in 2025. He received a very lengthy prison term; the court determined that despite his youth at the time of the crime, he posed a danger to the public. Others were also implicated: five persons were arrested and charged with first-degree hindering prosecution for helping Thompson and Smith avoid capture in the weeks after the shooting.
