On September 28, 2024, at approximately 11:21 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting at the Budgetel Inn & Suites located at 6400 Kelco Place in Fairfield, Alabama. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a barricaded suspect in one of the hotel rooms. The suspect surrendered without incident, and deputies discovered 35-year-old Paul Justin Stanley of Birmingham with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before noon.
