In the early hours of March 29, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Jada Mahogany White was tragically cut short by gun violence in the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. A student at Jackson-Olin High School, Jada was an outgoing and free-spirited teenager with dreams of becoming a neonatal nurse. She was a vibrant part of her school community as a member of the Key Club, a cheerleader, and a soccer player.
The fatal incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m.
near the intersection of Avenue F and 30th Street. An argument between two groups escalated into a shooting, and Jada was struck by the gunfire. When Birmingham police officers arrived at the scene, they found Jada on the sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response, she was pronounced deceased at the location. Another juvenile female was also injured in the shooting but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation and later announced the arrests of two suspects, Kwasze Larantaye-Abudullah Frazier and a 17-year-old male. Frazier was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Jada's death. However, in a turn of events, a Jefferson County jury found Frazier not guilty of murder in October 2023.
The loss of Jada was deeply felt by her family, friends, and the wider Birmingham community. Her mother, Gabriell White, remembered her daughter's excitement about becoming a senior and her aspirations to work with infants. In May 2024, Jackson-Olin High School posthumously honored Jada and four other students whose lives were lost to violence. During the graduation ceremony, a chair was decorated in her memory with her cap and cords, a poignant tribute to the young life that was taken too soon.
