On a warm evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 33-year-old Chaveda Willis was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. On September 4, 2023, Willis, a devoted mother and a student at Miles College, was with friends outside the Aria Restaurant and Lounge when gunfire suddenly erupted. The shooting, which also claimed the life of 24-year-old Markiezia Atkins, sent shockwaves through the community.
In the chaotic moments that followed the initial barrage of bullets, a
private vehicle rushed the wounded, including Willis and Atkins, to UAB Hospital, desperate for medical help. In a chilling turn of events that Birmingham Police would later describe as 'unheard of,' the assailants followed the vehicle to the hospital. There, as the victims were being attended to, the attackers opened fire once again, continuing their assault on the very steps of the emergency room. This brazen and cold-hearted act left no doubt as to the perpetrators' intent. Both Chaveda Willis and Markiezia Atkins succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the hospital. Three other individuals were also wounded in the initial nightclub shooting.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was a targeted attack, but that Willis and Atkins were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. In the year that has passed since the brutal slayings, the families of Chaveda Willis and Markiezia Atkins have been left to grapple with an immeasurable loss, their quest for justice ongoing.
