On March 22, 2023, at approximately 2:10 a.m., Birmingham police officers responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the 3600 block of Hemlock Avenue Southwest. Upon arrival, they discovered 44-year-old Fredrick Carnell Sykes unresponsive inside the home. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
