On a January night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the life of 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris was tragically cut short. It was January 15, 2023, and Harris, a mother from Birmingham, was visiting her cousin in the university town. She, along with her boyfriend and cousin, were out near The Strip, a popular area of restaurants and businesses, when an encounter turned fatal.
Reports suggest the incident began with a man attempting to flirt with Harris; when she declined his advances, an altercation ensued.
Later that evening, as Harris sat in the passenger seat of her boyfriend's Jeep, shots were fired into the vehicle. A bullet struck and killed her. The subsequent investigation led police to two suspects: Michael Lynn Davis and Darius Miles, who at the time was a player for the University of Alabama basketball team. Authorities alleged that while Davis was the one who pulled the trigger, Miles had provided him with the handgun used in the shooting. Both men were arrested and charged with capital murder. Another Alabama basketball player was identified as having brought the gun to the scene at Miles' request, but he was not charged with a crime.
In May 2025, following a trial that included testimony from other university athletes, Michael Lynn Davis was found guilty of the capital murder of Jamea Harris. The jury deliberated for just over an hour before reaching its verdict. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Darius Miles, who was removed from the university's basketball team following his arrest, has been held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond. He has pleaded not guilty, with his defense claiming self-defense. His separate trial on the charge of capital murder is scheduled to begin during the first week of December. If convicted, he also faces a sentence of life in prison without parole, as the death penalty was taken off the table by prosecutors.
