On what began as a quiet Saturday, March 12, 2005, the life of Richard Reeves, a 58-year-old male, was tragically cut short in a horrifying act of violence in Brookfield, Wisconsin. He was among the attendees of a weekly service for the Living Church of God, held within the seemingly safe confines of a Sheraton Hotel. The congregation was unexpectedly shattered when a fellow church member, Terry Michael Ratzmann, unleashed a deadly assault.
Ratzmann, a 44-year-old computer technician,
had been a member of the church. Eyewitnesses reported that he left the service and returned with a 9mm Beretta handgun. In a matter of moments, he fired 22 rounds into the congregation, creating a scene of chaos and terror. Richard Reeves was one of seven individuals fatally wounded in the attack, which also left four others injured. After his rampage, Ratzmann turned the gun on himself, ending his own life at the scene.
Investigations into the motive for this senseless violence pointed towards religious issues. It was reported that Ratzmann had been upset by a sermon delivered two weeks prior to the shooting. Authorities who searched his home found a rifle and ammunition, and concluded that he had acted alone in this meticulously planned attack.
