In the late afternoon of April 11, 2026, Latrell Williams, a 30-year-old Black male from Alsip, Illinois, was fatally shot while sitting in his car at the intersection of 167th Street and Cicero Avenue in Oak Forest. Williams was with his girlfriend at the time of the incident, which occurred at approximately 4:47 p.m. Another vehicle pulled up alongside Williams' car in the left-turn lane, and an individual inside opened fire, striking him multiple times on the left side of his body.

An off-duty medical professional who was nearby rendered aid to Williams before paramedics arrived and transported him to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The assailants fled the scene, heading eastbound on 167th Street toward Interstate 57. The ensuing investigation involved the Oak Forest Police Department, the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Illinois State Police.

Two suspects were later identified and apprehended. Edward Bass, 32, and Khalil Powell, 30, both from Chicago, were arrested in connection with the shooting. Bass was taken into custody on Saturday, the day of the incident, and Powell was arrested the following day. Prosecutors allege that Bass and Powell had followed Williams before the shooting. It is alleged that Bass was the gunman who fired a semiautomatic handgun multiple times, while Powell drove the getaway vehicle.

Following the shooting, Illinois State Police attempted to stop the suspects' vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase. Powell allegedly drove for about 15 miles, reaching speeds of 138 mph, before stopping the car at 51st and Hoyne. Both suspects then fled on foot. During the foot chase, Bass was reportedly seen discarding a firearm. Police successfully apprehended both men and recovered the weapon. Bass and Powell have since been charged with first-degree murder and were scheduled for a pretrial release hearing at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
