In the fading afternoon light of October 2, 2022, a verbal dispute near Birmingham's Railroad Park escalated with tragic finality. Malik Syrmone Shelton, a 26-year-old man, was in the 200 block of 16th Street South when the argument broke out with an adult male and female who were walking in the area. The confrontation quickly turned violent, and a firearm was discharged.
Birmingham Police officers responded to reports of the shooting at approximately 5:01 PM.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Shelton suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The individuals involved in the altercation remained at the location and cooperated with the ensuing police investigation. An adult suspect was subsequently taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The death of Malik Syrmone Shelton marked the city of Birmingham's 107th homicide investigation of that year. His mother, Anequinetta Jackson, publicly expressed her grief over the loss of her son and decried the ongoing violence in the community.
