On a cool autumn evening in Jefferson County, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Kendall Jarrod Thornton Jr. was tragically cut short. On November 6, 2022, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Thornton was driving his blue Kia Forte along Pinson Valley Parkway near Cleage Drive when the unthinkable happened. An unknown assailant, or assailants, opened fire on his vehicle, striking him with a bullet.
The gunshot wound caused Thornton to lose control of his car, which then veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree.
When authorities arrived at the scene, the initial belief was that Thornton had been the victim of a fatal car accident. However, upon closer inspection of the vehicle, investigators discovered that the car was riddled with bullet holes, revealing the violent nature of his death. It was then that the case was classified as a homicide. At the time of the shooting, detectives believed that other vehicles were nearby and that there may have been witnesses to the tragic event.
In the wake of his death, Kendall's family has been left to grapple with an immeasurable loss. His brother, Kendall Thornton III, remembers him as a 'stand-up guy' who was quiet and introverted but also funny, goofy, and laid-back around his loved ones. The family has made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, expressing their deep desire to know who is behind the senseless act of violence that took their beloved Kendall from them.
Despite the ongoing investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the murder of Kendall Jarrod Thornton Jr. remains unsolved. As of late 2024, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. A reward of up to $12,500 has been offered by Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama for any information that leads to an arrest, as authorities continue to seek help from the public to bring justice to Kendall and his grieving family.
