On November 24, 2021, 80-year-old Samuel Owens Bell Jr., a security guard at the Blue Creek Strip Mine in Jefferson County, Alabama, was found deceased from a gunshot wound near the mine site. His body was discovered by contractors arriving for work around 6:40 a.m. Earlier that morning, at approximately 1 a.m., another security guard, aged 44, was shot and injured at the same location.
