In the evening chill of a Birmingham, Alabama night on December 21, 2021, Jequaris Jerryll McCann, a 29-year-old male, found himself in a fatal encounter. Just before 8 p.m. at the Marathon gas station on 19th Street in the Ensley neighborhood, a sequence of events unfolded that would end his life. He was discovered unresponsive in the parking lot, having sustained gunshot wounds.
Emergency services transported him to UAB Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation into the shooting suggested a carjacking gone wrong. It is believed that several individuals entered McCann's unoccupied vehicle while it was parked at the gas station. As they were in the process of stealing the car, shots were fired, and McCann was fatally wounded. Shortly after the incident, patrol officers in the vicinity spotted McCann's vehicle near the Marathon station. As they approached, several males were seen fleeing from the car. Despite a search of the area and the deployment of additional resources, the suspects managed to elude capture. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide.
