On the night of September 10, 2021, at approximately 10:27 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 200 block of 4th Court West, within the Elyton Village Housing Community. Upon arrival, they discovered 45-year-old Leroy Earl Sumlin unresponsive in the driver's seat of a vehicle that had rolled into a building. Mr. Sumlin had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel.
