Camari DeVaughn Tyus, a 17-year-old male, was killed by a gunshot on the afternoon of February 4, 2021, in Center Point, Alabama. Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of 19th Court NE after reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they found Tyus dead at the scene, the moment already heavy with the kind of stunned silence that follows a sudden, violent break in what had been an ordinary day.
Investigators described the shooting as rooted in a family gathering that spun out of control. Witnesses told authorities that an argument flared, then an altercation erupted, and in the turmoil a gun was fired and the round struck Tyus. Early accounts emphasized how quickly the situation escalated—from voices raised in a dispute to a fatal wound in a matter of moments—leaving people at the house trying to make sense of what had just happened.
In the days that followed, detectives worked the case alongside the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, and warrants were obtained against Curtis Williams of Birmingham. Williams was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with Tyus’s death.
