Jessie Alan Merchant Birt, a 24-year-old male, was tragically murdered on Monday, October 12, 2020, in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Birmingham, Alabama. At the time of his death, he was a senior in the mechanical engineering program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was just one semester away from graduation.
Known as a compassionate and loving individual, Jessie was deeply committed to social justice causes and had a profound love for animals and the
environment. His passion for his field of study was evident, with a particular interest in thermodynamics. In memory of his dedication to education and his desire to help others, his family established The Jesse Marchant Birt Memorial Scholarship at UAB to support aspiring engineering students.
The Birmingham Police Department is investigating the homicide. While details surrounding the motive and the circumstances of his death have not been officially released, there has been speculation that it may have been connected to his compassionate nature, possibly intervening on behalf of a stray animal.
