In the early hours of a Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Navari Deon Jones, a talented 38-year-old male musician, was tragically cut short. On February 26, 2022, an altercation inside the Tru-Riders Motorcycle Club escalated to gunfire, forever altering the course of many lives. Jones, a respected drummer for the band Ampliphied Noiz and a church musician, was among those struck by the ensuing violence.
Wounded, Jones attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle.
His desperate drive for safety ended just a mile away, near the Birmingham Police headquarters on 1st Avenue North. An officer in the vicinity heard the sound of a crash and discovered Jones's vehicle had collided with two parked cars. First responders arrived to find him unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. In the chaos at the motorcycle club, two women also sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to Ernando Daron Dorsey, who was 47 years old at the time. He was arrested and faced multiple charges, including murder. After a trial presided over by Jefferson County Circuit Judge Michael Streety, a jury convicted Dorsey of the lesser charge of provocation manslaughter, a Class B felony, as well as first-degree assault. Following the verdict, Dorsey was taken into custody at the Jefferson County Jail to await sentencing. The conviction brought a measure of legal closure to a case that silenced a cherished voice in Birmingham's music community.
