On September 13, 2020, 71-year-old Javanna "Midge" Cotton Owens was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in the 500 block of Brussels Circle. Surveillance footage showed Owens walking up to a vehicle as if she recognized the occupants. As she approached, a single gunshot was fired from the vehicle, striking her. The vehicle then fled the scene. Owens was found unresponsive in the roadway and transported to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
