In Birmingham, Alabama, a one-year-old boy named Jayden Maurice McGee died on March 10, 2020. His death was the result of severe injuries he sustained three days earlier, on the night of March 7, while he was in the care of his mother's boyfriend, Christopher Eugene Knight.
According to police reports from the time, Knight, then 35, alerted Jayden's mother that the child was unresponsive but allegedly refused to call for emergency services.
It was Jayden's mother who ultimately had to summon paramedics. The young boy was rushed to Children's of Alabama, where the medical staff discovered he had suffered a fractured skull and a blood clot.
Despite undergoing surgery to relieve swelling on his brain, the damage was too severe. Jayden was taken off life support and passed away a short time later.
Following an investigation into the circumstances of Jayden's death, Christopher Eugene Knight of Fairfield was arrested and charged with capital murder. He was subsequently held in the Jefferson County Jail. Records indicated that at the time of his arrest for Jayden's murder, Knight also had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a previous, unrelated charge of breaking and entering a vehicle.
In March 2024, a jury found Christopher Knight guilty of reckless manslaughter in Jayden's death. On May 13, 2024, he was sentenced to serve 33 years in prison.
