In the early morning hours of February 6, 2020, the life of 27-year-old Devonta Reddick was tragically cut short in a violent home invasion in Birmingham, Alabama. Reddick, a male, was at his home on Dogwood Lane with his pregnant girlfriend, Sabrea Baylor, and their 3-year-old child when at least two men forced their way inside at approximately 6:30 a.m. The assailants' motive was believed to be theft.
A violent confrontation ensued, during which Reddick was fatally shot. He was discovered unresponsive in his front yard and was pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend, who was nine months pregnant, was also shot and wounded during the attack. Despite her injuries, she survived, and heroically gave birth to their child the following day.
Six months after the brutal slaying, authorities apprehended Melvin Charles Morris, then 41, in Nashville, Tennessee, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals. He was extradited to Birmingham and charged with the murder of Devonta Reddick. A second suspect, Cameron Dejuan Blanding, was also later arrested and charged in connection with the home invasion and murder.
In July 2025, a Jefferson County jury convicted Melvin Charles Morris of felony murder and first-degree assault. He was subsequently sentenced to two consecutive life sentences under Alabama's habitual offender laws, owing to prior felony convictions. The second suspect, Cameron Dejuan Blanding, is scheduled to stand trial in June 2026 for his alleged involvement in the death of Devonta Reddick.
