On August 29, 2021, 21-year-old Artez Lamont "AJ" McGowan Jr. was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred around 1:51 p.m. in the 500 block of Avenue G in the Pratt City community. Responding officers from the Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct found that McGowan had already been transported to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel, where he was later pronounced deceased.
