In the winter of 2020, a young man's life was cut tragically short on a highway in Alabama. Dakota Colton Nunley, a 22-year-old male, was killed on December 2, 2020, in what authorities described as a road rage incident in Remlap, located in Blount County. Nunley was driving his white Dodge truck along Highway 75 when an encounter with another motorist turned fatal. The driver of a silver Toyota 4Runner fired a weapon, striking Nunley in the chest.
The assailant then fled the scene, leaving Nunley mortally wounded.
The Blount County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation, seeking help from the public to identify the person responsible for this senseless act of violence. Eyewitnesses described the suspect as a large white male with a gray goatee. Investigators worked diligently, gathering surveillance footage and other evidence to piece together the events of that day and track the movements of the fleeing suspect. Their efforts paid off, and just over two weeks after the shooting, an arrest was made in the case that had shaken the community.
On December 17, 2020, authorities took 59-year-old Michael Wayne Harris of Steele, Alabama, into custody and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with Nunley's death. Initially, Harris denied any involvement in the shooting. However, he later admitted to firing the shot but claimed he had done so in self-defense. This claim was contradicted by the evidence presented during his trial, which showed that Harris had not only fled the scene but had also disposed of the firearm in a wooded area and failed to report the incident to law enforcement. In November 2023, a jury convicted Michael Wayne Harris of murder. He faces a sentence of 20 years to life in prison for the death of Dakota Nunley.
