On February 7, 2003, 32-year-old White female Shawny Lee Hatch Smith of Cheyenne, Wyoming, was killed; her body was discovered the next day, February 8, in a field off U.S. Highway 85 in Weld County, Colorado, roughly a quarter-mile from the Wyoming state line. Authorities reported the 32-year-old female victim had been beaten and sexually assaulted. The case has remained open since 2003.
