In the late summer of 1975, in the quiet community of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, a Caucasian woman named Carol Jean Pierce, 35 years old, vanished from her home. Her husband, Richard Pierce, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, told authorities that he last saw his wife on the morning of September 8, 1975, before he left for work. He claimed that when he returned that afternoon, she was gone. In the days that followed, Richard Pierce’s behavior raised suspicion. He didn't report his wife missing to the police until a week after she disappeared, and just four days after that, he moved to Michigan as he had been planning for his retirement. Friends who visited the couple's home after Carol's disappearance noted that her personal belongings, including her purse and her beloved cat, were still at the residence.
The investigation into Carol Pierce's disappearance grew cold over the years, though suspicion long lingered on her husband. Neighbors and acquaintances provided statements to investigators over the decades, painting a picture of a troubled and abusive marriage. One neighbor recalled seeing Carol with bruises and recounted Carol telling her on multiple occasions that she feared her husband would kill her. In April 2022, a jury found Richard Pierce guilty of first-degree murder and disinterment of the dead. He was sentenced to life in prison. Throughout the investigation and trial, Richard Pierce maintained his innocence, never revealing the location of Carol Jean Pierce's remains. He died in prison in October 2024.
