In January of 2022, the city of Milwaukee was shaken by the discovery of a grim scene inside a duplex on North 21st Street. Among the victims of this tragic event was Michelle Williams, a 49-year-old Black/African American woman. On January 23rd, police responded to a call for a welfare check at the residence and uncovered the bodies of six individuals, all of whom had been fatally shot.
The victims, who ranged in age from 23 to 49, were identified as Michelle Williams, her husband Donta Williams, Donald Smith, Charles Hardy, Javoni Liddell, and Caleb Jordan.
The initial investigation launched by the Milwaukee Police Department was extensive, pointing to a targeted event rather than a random act of violence. Early in the investigation, law enforcement officials took four persons of interest into custody for questioning, though no immediate charges were filed in connection with the homicides. The community was left in a state of fear and uncertainty as they awaited answers, grappling with the senseless loss of six lives. Family members of Michelle Williams described her as a loving individual with a kind heart, making the nature of her death all the more difficult to comprehend.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in June 2022, when authorities arrested and charged 34-year-old Travis Lamar Birkley with six counts of felony murder. Investigators pieced together evidence that suggested the murders occurred on or around January 20th, a few days before the victims were found. The motive, as it emerged through court documents and witness statements, appeared to be a robbery that had spiraled into a horrific act of violence. According to a witness, Birkley had confessed that he and his cousin had gone to the residence to rob Donta Williams. The situation escalated when Michelle Williams attempted to intervene, leading to the shooting of both her and her husband, and subsequently the other four individuals present in the home.
The evidence against Birkley was compelling. Cellphone data placed him at the location of the duplex around the time the murders were believed to have been committed. A particularly damning piece of evidence was a selfie found on Birkley's phone, taken in the basement of the home where three of the victims were discovered. In the photo, he was seen wearing a pair of glasses belonging to one of the victims. Despite the charges against Birkley and the mention of a cousin's involvement, no other arrests have been publicly announced. In a further development, in January 2023, a court found Travis Birkley incompetent to stand trial, with medical professionals deeming it unlikely that he would regain competency. This turn of events has left the path to justice for Michelle Williams and the other five victims uncertain.
