In the winter of 2008, a senseless act of violence irrevocably altered the lives of two families on the north side of Milwaukee. On a January evening, 15-year-old Javane Gaines, an African-American male, was walking home with his cousin, Andre Evans, after a game of basketball. The two boys, both just 15 at the time, were suddenly targeted by gunfire.
