On the night of December 6, 2021, Jose Stanton, a 28-year-old male, was working his shift as a security guard at the Days Inn & Suites near 6th and Vine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. An argument is believed to have led to the fatal shooting that occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. Friends and family believe Stanton was attempting to break up a fight when the situation escalated. He was shot multiple times and died at the scene. According to a friend, there had been a dispute between a man and a woman at the hotel, and Stanton had instructed them to leave. The man reportedly returned later and shot him.

The Milwaukee Police Department immediately began an investigation into the homicide. They identified 36-year-old Arrick Adams as the primary suspect. Investigators were able to track the cellphone of Adams' girlfriend, which led them to a residence in Henry County, Georgia. On December 10, 2021, just days after the shooting, authorities in Georgia located Adams. When they attempted to apprehend him, he fled in a vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended when deputies boxed in his car on Interstate 75, and Adams surrendered. A weapon was recovered from the vehicle.

Following his arrest in Georgia, Arrick Adams faced charges there related to the chase, including fleeing with the attempt to elude, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. In Wisconsin, he was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. In April 2025, Adams pleaded guilty to lesser charges of first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree reckless injury as part of a plea deal. His original charge of first-degree intentional homicide would have carried a mandatory life sentence. His sentencing was scheduled for July of that year.
