A mom misses picking up her child at the bus stop; she is found stabbed to death On a cold December day in 1994, the life of 27-year-old Geraldine Ross was tragically cut short in her Fredericksburg, Virginia apartment. A single mother, Geraldine, a Black or African American female, was found murdered in her home in the Forest Village Apartments on Forrest Village Drive. The discovery was made by her eight-year-old son, Jonathan, who had come home from school to find the apartment locked.
After waiting for several hours in the cold, a maintenance worker let him in, where he found his mother unresponsive on the bedroom floor.
Police investigators determined that Geraldine Ross had been both stabbed and strangled. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, leading authorities to believe that she may have known her attacker. Despite a thorough investigation at the time, no arrests were ever made, and no specific suspects were publicly identified. The case eventually went cold, leaving a lingering sense of injustice for her family and the community.
Years later, the Fredericksburg Police Department, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, renewed efforts to solve the homicide. On the 25th anniversary of her death, law enforcement made a public plea for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. They announced plans to re-submit evidence for examination using modern forensic techniques that were unavailable in 1994 and intended to re-interview individuals previously questioned, as well as some new persons of interest. Despite these renewed efforts, the case of Geraldine Ross's murder remains unsolved, and the identity of her killer is still unknown.
