Do you know what happened to Clemente? In the early hours of March 6, 2016, a violent encounter in the parking lot of the Town and Country Apartment Complex on Armfield Road in South Richmond tragically ended the life of 34-year-old Clemente Jimenez-Lopez. Jimenez-Lopez, a resident of the 1400 block of Armfield Road, was pronounced dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred around 2:12 AM, was officially classified as a homicide by the Richmond Police Department.
The investigation into the
death of the male victim revealed a harrowing sequence of events. Jimenez-Lopez and two other men were approached by multiple assailants who demanded their belongings. When the three victims attempted to flee, their attackers pursued them. While the other two men were caught, assaulted, and robbed, Jimenez-Lopez was fatally shot in the head. Initially, there was some confusion regarding the victim's identity, as he was found with a fake ID. However, police were later able to confirm his real name.
The subsequent investigation uncovered that the murder was connected to the violent activities of the MS-13 gang. A multi-year collaborative effort between the FBI's Richmond Area Violent Enterprise Task Force, the City of Richmond Police Department's Major Crimes Division, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations led to several arrests and convictions in the case.
Nearly five years after the murder, in March 2021, Osmar Hernandez Santamaria, a member of MS-13, was found guilty of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, and three counts of attempted robbery. Another MS-13 member, Francisco Ovidio Lemus-Castillo, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted robbery, receiving a sentence that resulted in 25 years of active incarceration. Additionally, two MS-13 associates, Arsenio Joshua Alers and Jose Rivas-Santiago, entered guilty pleas to second-degree murder and attempted robbery, respectively, in late 2019 and early 2020.
