A woman's remains are discovered in a shallow grave 5 months after she vanished
In the small community of Cody, Virginia, Emma Compton Layne, a 52-year-old woman known for her friendly demeanor at the convenience store she owned and operated, went missing in June of 2017. Her disappearance on June 17 of that year sparked immediate concern among her family when they were unable to contact her the following day. The discovery of her personal belongings, including her cell phone, car keys, and even her beloved dog, left behind at her home, deepened the mystery and heightened the fear that something terrible had occurred. For five months, her whereabouts remained unknown, a painful void for her loved ones and a perplexing case for law enforcement.
The painful uncertainty came to a grim end on November 22, 2017, when hunters stumbled upon human remains in a heavily wooded area not far from a property Emma owned with her husband. The body had been placed in a shallow grave in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime. In January 2018, the remains were positively identified as Emma Layne, and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office confirmed they were treating her death as a homicide. The cause of death was later determined to be 'homicidal violence to include traumatic neck injury'. For years, the case remained a top priority for investigators, yet no arrests were made, leaving Emma's family and the community to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding her violent death.
A significant breakthrough in the long-unsolved case finally came in November 2024, nearly seven and a half years after Emma's disappearance. On November 27, 2024, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Emma's husband, 67-year-old Russell Wayne Layne. He was indicted and charged with the murder of his wife. The arrest, which brought a sense of relief and a feeling of a full-circle moment to Emma's sisters, who had tirelessly advocated for justice, occurred the day before Thanksgiving, poignantly echoing the day before Thanksgiving in 2017 when Emma's remains were discovered. Russell Layne is currently being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority without bond.
