In a quiet motel room near the Nashville International Airport, a story of companionship took a dark and fatal turn. Joseph G. Williams, a 65-year-old man who had been living at the Red Roof Plus on Claridge Drive for several months, was found dead in what police quickly deemed a suspicious situation. His discovery by a motel employee led to an investigation that would reach across state lines.
When first responders entered the room, they found Mr. Williams fully clothed, lying on his back in the bathtub. A piece of clothing covered his face, and when it was removed, dried blood was visible. The scene within the small room held other clues that suggested a violent struggle had taken place. The drywall near the bathtub was broken, with pieces of it scattered inside the tub itself, pointing to a confrontation that ended in tragedy.
Homicide detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department began to piece together the events that led to Williams' death. Their investigation soon focused on a man named Omeed Yahya Esmail, 39, who had been sharing the motel room with Williams for the two months prior to the discovery of his body. Investigators determined that Esmail was the last person seen with Williams in the room on March 15.
The search for Esmail concluded in early July when he was located and apprehended by U.S. Marshals in New York City. Following his arrest, arrangements were made for Esmail to be extradited back to Nashville to face a criminal homicide warrant in connection with the death of Joseph Williams.
