James Nevills, 53, a White man from Nashville, Tennessee, was pulled into a confrontation that began like so many late-night disputes do—sharp words, a rising temper, and the cramped aisles of a neighborhood convenience store. On the night of August 26, 2017, police said the argument flared inside the One Stop Market at 626 40th Avenue North. When Nevills left the store and headed toward the nearby intersection of 40th Avenue North and Delaware Avenue, the conflict followed him into the dark.
