On a busy Friday evening on Philadelphia's popular South Street, tragedy struck, cutting short the life of 25-year-old John Green. It was just after 8 p.m. on September 4, 2015, in the vibrant entertainment district, with many people lining up for a concert at the Theatre of the Living Arts. Amidst the bustling crowd, a scuffle broke out, followed by the sound of gunshots.
When the chaos subsided, Green was found unconscious on the sidewalk, having been shot in the abdomen.
He was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital but succumbed to his injuries less than half an hour after the shooting. The proximity of the crime scene to the concert venue prompted police to cancel the event and clear the area of hundreds of patrons to secure the scene.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing the alleged shooter jump into a limousine, which then sped away eastbound on South Street. Police were able to catch up with the vehicle at South Street and Columbus Boulevard. Shortly after the incident, authorities announced the arrest of 28-year-old Tylee Wilbur of Philadelphia. He was subsequently charged with murder and weapons offenses in connection with the death of John Green. A semi-automatic handgun was also recovered from the wheel well of a parked vehicle just a block and a half from the shooting.
