In the late afternoon of a Tuesday in North Philadelphia, 43-year-old Raheem Jefferson parked his car and began walking towards the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society for a prayer service. As he made his way through the parking lot on Germantown Avenue, a man dressed in dark clothing approached him from behind and opened fire with a large-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
The sudden and brutal attack was captured on surveillance video, which showed the gunman firing at least 17 rounds.
Jefferson was struck in the head and upper body. The footage revealed the shooter standing over him after he had collapsed to the ground and firing additional shots in what police described as an 'execution-type homicide.' After the relentless assault, the gunman fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan. A person who was with Jefferson at the time of the shooting was unharmed. Police were called to the scene, and Jefferson was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at 5:13 p.m.
Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the targeted killing and have not indicated whether it was connected to religious intolerance. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made, and the police are actively searching for the suspect. The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement works to understand the circumstances that led to the violent end of Raheem Jefferson's life.
