Daymond Garner, a 29-year-old Black man, was a quiet person by nature, his world circumscribed by a close-knit circle of family and a few trusted friends.
He lived with the daily burden of sickle cell anemia, a painful condition that often kept him from venturing far from his West Oak Lane residence in Philadelphia. His nickname was “Cash,” a shortened version of his middle name, Cashif, and it was in his living room, a place of comfort and familiarity, that his life was violently extinguished.
On the night of June 5th, what began as a tranquil evening of watching television from his couch was shattered by an eruption of gunfire. A killer, or perhaps killers, breached the sanctity of his home through a back door, unleashing a barrage of at least fourteen shots at close range. The attack was so sudden and ferocious that his grandmother, who was upstairs at the time, initially mistook the sound for firecrackers. When she came downstairs to investigate, she found her grandson on the floor. Her first thought was that he had suffered a medical emergency related to his lifelong battle with sickle cell anemia. The grim reality, however, was that he had been the victim of what police would later describe as an “execution-style” ambush. Nothing was taken from the home, deepening the mystery of why anyone would target a man known for his quiet demeanor.
