On July 7, 2013, Lamar Pondexter, a 36-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, was shot and killed in the Carrick neighborhood during the early morning hours. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near Nobles Lane and Denise Street. According to police reports, Pondexter was shot at point-blank range and was discovered by a neighbor shortly thereafter. His son, Naquon Luster, was inside their apartment nearby when the shooting took place.
Luster recalled hearing a loud gunshot and later learned from police that his father had been killed on the scene.
Pondexter's family described him as an outgoing, caring individual who was well-liked in his community. His father, Walter Pondexter, shared that his son was "loving, smiling, and a helpful person." Despite efforts to gather information, law enforcement did not immediately identify any suspects, and no arrests were announced in connection with the case. The Carrick shooting was one of two fatal incidents in Pittsburgh that night, with another individual, James Lipford, also being shot and killed in a separate location in Penn Hills. These tragic events further highlighted the challenges faced by local authorities in addressing rising violence in Pittsburgh during that period.
