On April 14, 2015, 38-year-old DeShannon D. Reid was sitting on the porch of his home on West 27th Street in Wilmington, Delaware, accompanied by his mother. During this time, Damian Thomas approached and attempted to engage Reid in conversation. Reid, however, asked Thomas to leave him alone, leading to a verbal altercation between the two men. Following the dispute, Thomas retrieved a firearm from a nearby apartment, returned to the scene, and shot Reid.
