In the early morning hours of October 20, 2013, Demetrius Broadnax, a 27-year-old Black male from Monroeville, Pennsylvania, was at the Diverse Banquet Hall in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He was attending a social event hosted by the New Brotherhood Motorcycle Club. Broadnax, a father and a member of the Ruff Ryders Motorcycle Club, was known by friends and family as a quiet and well-mannered person.
A previous motorcycle accident had left him with paralysis on one side of his body.
Around 3 a.m., chaos erupted inside the club on Kelly Street when gunfire broke out. In the midst of the violence, Broadnax and a 21-year-old woman named Jasmine Morris were fatally shot. At least four other people were also wounded in the shooting. When police arrived, they found people fleeing the building and discovered Broadnax and Morris deceased inside.
In the years following the shooting, the case has remained unsolved, with no arrests made. The lack of witnesses coming forward has been a significant hurdle in the investigation, a silence that law enforcement and community members believe may be rooted in a fear of retaliation. Broadnax's family has made repeated public pleas for information that could lead to an arrest and has even offered a reward. His mother has been a vocal advocate for justice, organizing rallies and urging the community to break the code of silence to help detectives solve the case. The Pittsburgh Police Department continues to ask for anyone with information to come forward.
