On November 13, 2016, Laughlin, a married father of three, attended a Pittsburgh Steelers game against the Dallas Cowboys. As he and his wife, Rebecca, were leaving the stadium after the game, an altercation took place in a tunnel leading to the concourse.
Accounts from a subsequent lawsuit filed by his widow described the initial moments of the confrontation. It was reported that Rebecca Laughlin inadvertently bumped into an allegedly intoxicated man named Colin Jones. This seemingly minor incident escalated quickly, with profanities exchanged between William Laughlin and Colin Jones. Another man, David Jones, was said to have intervened. The situation devolved into a physical struggle, causing all four individuals to fall to the concrete floor. In the fall, William Laughlin's head struck the ground with significant force.
Following the altercation, Laughlin returned to his home in Baldwin Borough. The next morning, on November 14, 2016, his wife found him unresponsive. Despite her efforts to perform CPR, William Laughlin had succumbed to his injuries.
