On a chaotic Sunday morning in Oklahoma City, 16-year-old Timothy Moreland, a Black male, was fatally shot on November 16, 2008. The young man, who was a football player at Centennial High School after transferring from Millwood High School, had managed to get into the City Knights nightclub on Southwestern Avenue using a friend's ID, as the establishment required patrons to be at least 18 years old.
The night's festivities devolved into violence when several fights broke out both inside
and outside the club. Amidst the turmoil, around 1:55 a.m., a single gunshot was heard. Witnesses reported seeing Moreland collapse onto some chairs inside the nightclub. Security personnel and some of his friends then carried him outside. It was there that police, who were responding to the reports of fighting, discovered individuals attempting to administer CPR to the teenager. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. It was only at the hospital that it was determined he had been shot.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials faced a challenging investigation. The large number of people present at the club during the incident made it difficult to identify a suspect or gather clear witness accounts of what had transpired. An Oklahoma City police spokesman described the case as one that would be "really difficult to figure out" due to the chaotic environment and the lack of forthcoming information from potential witnesses. At the time, police had no suspects and made a public plea for anyone with information to come forward.
